  • How does AeroBarrier work?
AeroBarrier is a building air sealing system that seals the building envelope for leakage sizes up to 12mm. A water-based sealant is sprayed into rooms that are pressurized with a Blower Door. The sealant is self-propelled to the locations of visible and invisible leaks where it forms a seal by accumulating over the opening of the leak. The sealing process takes only 60-90 minutes, the sealant dries quickly and the rooms are ventilated. This ensures that construction can resume shortly after the process is complete with little or no impact on standard construction schedules. The AeroBarrier system measures air leakage in real time, allowing the system to accurately meet specific air tightness requirements and guarantee results.
  • Are all indoor surfaces covered with AeroBarrier?
AeroBarrier sealant builds up and seals only where it's needed. During the work process, the air pressure inside the room is higher than outside, causing air to escape through the building's leaks. At the same time, a special sealant is sprayed inside the premises. The sprayed material is carried by the air flow directly to the place to be sealed, where it accumulates until no more air escapes through the slit.
  • How does AeroBarrier sealant “know” where to accumulate?
Magic... 😊 ... or - PHYSICS! AeroBarrier X1 liquid sealant accumulates in areas of accelerated airflow. Patented material, process, equipment, software – everything works together to ensure a controlled and reliable building sealing process every time.
  • How is leakage measured?
The AeroBarrier system uses a modified Blower Door to measure the air leakage of the enclosure during the sealing process. Fan doors are calibrated to meet ASTM E779, E1554, CGSB-149.10-M86, EN 13829, EN ISO 9972, ATTMA Technical Standard 1, NFPA 2001, RESNET and USACE.
  • What is a modified blower door?
AeroBarrier uses a modified blower door (Blower-door) by adding a heater to the fan. This allows the system to achieve optimal room temperature and humidity during the sealing process, allowing more sealant to be sprayed into the room for a faster and more efficient sealing process.
  • What size leaks will AeroBarrier seal?
AeroBarrier will seal gaps as large as 12mm and as small as a human hair. Aerosol caulking is extremely effective at sealing narrow gaps and extremely small holes that are not usually cost-effective to seal manually or are missed by manual caulking methods.
  • Is your material safe?
Our formula is a water soluble organic compound and has been proven to be safe. The sealant is extremely low in VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and, being inert, requires no chemical reaction to form the seal, meaning no off-gassing. Over 150,000 projects have been sealed to date, and AeroBarrier have helped hospitals, surgery centers, schools and public buildings provide clean, healthy and comfortable air, as well as save energy and money. AeroBarrier X1 sealant is GreenGuard Gold certified, which meets the strictest hygiene certification requirements used in schools and healthcare facilities.
  • How large a room (square meters) can be sealed?
AeroBarrier has been used in apartments with an area of less than 50 square meters and buildings with an area of more than 1000 square meters. If the required air pressure can be achieved in the room compared to the outside of the building, it can be sealed. An additional Blower Door can be added to increase pressure in larger rooms.
  • How tightly can AeroBarrier actually seal a home?
AeroBarrier can seal to any level, but the value is in the system's ability to allow builders to seal the home as tightly as it is intended. With AeroBarrier, you can guarantee to achieve any standards corresponding to the Almost Zero Energy Building, Passive House, ENERY STAR or Net Zero requirements.
  • I heard that too airtight a house is actually a bad thing…
A house that is too airtight can be a bad thing if the building is not designed for that level of tightness. The popular saying “build tight, ventilate right” applies here and works both ways. A very tight building without adequate ventilation can cause problems with indoor air quality. On the other hand, a leaky building will not be energy efficient and may cause the mechanical ventilation system to not work as intended. Because AeroBarrier can set the building air tightness to be specific level, it eliminates the guesswork and ensures that the home has the actual air tightness parameters that the professionals used in the system capacity calculations.
  • What's in the spray sealant?
AeroBarrier sealant is based on a proprietary water-based acrylic that has been used for many years as a liquid-applied vapor permeable air barrier. The sealant is GREENGUARD Gold certified and has been tested to various ASTM standards and NFPA 285 for fire spread, smoke generation, adhesion, anti-fungal properties and tensile strength. The sealant is extremely low in VOCs and has no fumes.
  • At what stage of construction can AeroBarrier be sealed?
AeroBarrier can be applied at any time between the construction of the barrier structure and before occupancy. Although the ideal time to apply AeroBarrier is before or immediately after interior finishing. Other factors that affect installation are the construction process (i.e. ventilated or unventilated attic), the type of thermal insulation chosen and the climatic zone of the site.
  • What surfaces need to be protected?
Very minimal preparation is required when AeroBarrier sealing is carried out after construction of load-bearing/barrier structures or after installation of internal surfaces such as plasterboard. Vertical surfaces - walls, doors and windows - do not need masking. All technical openings for ventilation, plumbing must be covered before installing the air barrier. All finished horizontal surfaces must be masked.
  • What happens if the sealant accidentally gets on something?
AeroBarrier can be cleaned from surfaces. We recommend using a standard citrus-based cleaner as soon as possible.
  • How long does it take to seal the building to perform the work?
The entire AeroBarrier process from preparation to completion takes about four hours for a typical single-family home. If the goal is air sealing at the leakage level of a passive house or a very tight containment structure (q50 =< 0.6), additional time may be required, depending on the original density of the building.
  • Is it safe to breathe indoors while the building is being sealed?
No. During the spraying of the sealant, no other persons should be present in the premises. If the AeroBarrier technician must enter the room while it is being pressurized during application, they will wear personal protective equipment (PPE). After sealing is complete, the area can be safely entered without protective equipment after approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
  • How soon after the AeroBarrier process can other construction work resume on the premises?
The building must be ventilated for 30 minutes after compaction is complete. This is done by opening doors and windows while the fan is running. At this time, the AeroBarrier sealing equipment and masking materials are removed.
  • What is the life cycle of the product or how long does an effective seal last?
Third-party laboratory tests reveal that the AeroBarrier passes a simulated 50-year durability test with little or no seal degradation.
  • Can AeroBarrier be used as a vapor barrier?
No, AeroBarrier sealant is considered open to diffusion, allowing water vapor to pass through the sealant. AeroBarrier is not a primary vapor barrier.
  • Can AeroBarrier air sealing be done in cold weather?
The AeroBarrier process requires temperature control and air pressurization of the areas to be sealed. The ideal condition is an outdoor temperature ≥ 4˚C. Sealing can be done below 4˚C, but additional steps may be required to prepare the site.
